Pokok hujan-hujan, Pukul Lima or Rain Tree

On the 3rd March, 2009 the magnificent Rain Tree, botanically called Samanea saman, was made famous by an incidence that took place in Alor Setar, Perak. Perak Speaker, V Sivakumar convened an emergency sitting of the state assembly in the shade of a Rain Tree, 200 meters away from the State Secretariat Building. This story was picked up from The Malaysian Insider.

Later from another source I read that the incidence was held under a Yellow flame tree on the 4th March, 2009. (I presumed the writer of the article was making a double mistakes). The Yellow flame tree is also called Flamboyant, Batai Laut. The botanical name is Peltophorum pterocarpum.

The Rain Tree, found in abundance in our towns, are planted as shade trees. True to form, the canopy takes a hemispherical shape likes an open umbrella, heavy branching with small leaves about 4cm long. The roots are massive, rather shallow and spreading. The characteristics of the roots system means the tree is not suited for small or enclosed areas as they are prone to break concrete walk-ways, drains and utilities.

As the tree is capable to grow to a height of 25 meters with a canopy spreading to 30 meters wide, it is good to justify the area. We have seen times and again how the shade trees found in our towns are pruned back or felled because no due consideration was done during the planning stage. It is a shame that landscaping takes a backstage seat at the planning stage. Knowing and capitalizing on the characteristics of the trees go a long way in the beautification programme of our towns, residential areas and villages.

Below are the pictures I have taken at my favourite jogging park in Kuching.

Notice the characteristics of the Rain tree as previously explained
